Tool Blogs

Reading blogs can be a great way to keep up with what’s going on in any field.  That’s why I write this blog ;-)   I wanted to let you know about some other options, just in case this blog isn’t everything you’ll ever need.

One blog that’s been around for a long time is tool monger.  Their tag ling is the Internet’s first tool blog.  Another that I’ve found is cop tool.  If you want another blog that’s specifically about cordless drills there is a tool blog at blogspot here.

Happy reading.

Holiday Season

The holiday season is here and that means it’s time to look for good deals on power tools.  I was out on Black Friday and saw several good deals.  I picked up a cheap Black and Decker 18v cordless drill from Walmart for $25.  It’s hard to beat that.

I also saw some nicer tools at deep discounts.  There were Dewalt drills for $99.  I saw Makita kits cheaper than normal.

It seems like cordless drills were the most advertised tools.  Of course there were also all of the usual suspects: pliers, flashlights, screwdrivers, etc.

It was a good time to pick up things you might be needing.

What did you guys find?

What else can you use a power drill for?

There’s a post over at powerdrills that asks what else you can do with a cordless drill besides drilling holes or driving screws.  I couldn’t think of anything cool that I’ve ever done.  Can you?

Superfreakonomics and Global Warming

You may have already seen the brouhaha that’s erupted over the new book Superfreakomonics and what it has to say about Global Warming.  If not, I just wanted to call your attention to it.

It may seem like an odd thing to publish here on a blog about power tools, but I’ve always thought of us power tool enthusiasts as “can do” people that make things happen.  As such I think it behooves us to stay informed about topics like global warming, so that we can be “doing” the right things.

24v Cordless Drills

I was searching for information on 24v cordless drills when I came across a blog at wordpress.com.  There was a post on 24v cordless drills and how they’re much better than they used to be just a few years ago.  The post references a page that rates 24v cordless drills.  The biggest change has been batteries.  The power density of batteries has been steadily rising and now we’re at the point when we can have a good, high-powered cordless hammer drill.

Dewalt Drills

What do you guys think about Dewalt?  From what I’ve heard their “low-end” line is the same thing as Black and Decker.  But their higher end line is much better stuff.  But if you go with the higher end stuff you’re paying the same price as a Makita or Milwaukee.  Is it worth it?

Dremel Tool

Recently I’ve been needing to drill some holes through glass.  To do this you need high RPM’s, at least 30K RPM.  Normally you think about Dremel for this job.  And they have out a a new 4000 line.  I think it just came out because I can’t find much information on it.  My local Lowe’s doesn’t even have it yet.

I also noticed that Bosch has a line of high RPM tools as well.  The Dremel tools are 1.15 amps and 2.0 amps.  The Bosch tools I saw were 5.0 and 5.5 amps.  That’s a lot more power, but I haven’t heard anything about them.

Anyone have experiences in this area to share?
